A to Z Adjectives Examples List & Sentences

Creating a vivid and interesting description can be difficult, but using adjectives can help. This A to Z list of adjectives will give you a wide range of words to choose from when describing people, places, or things. Whether you are writing fiction or nonfiction, these adjectives will make your work more descriptive and engaging. Use them wisely to bring your writing to life!

Adjectives are words that describe, identify and quantify people or things and add detail to our writing. They usually go in front of a noun or after a linking verb. When we use them, we can make our meaning more precise or more expressive. For example, instead of saying ‘the big house’, we could say ‘the huge, imposing house’.

To form the comparative and superlative forms of most adjectives, we add -er for the comparative and -est for the superlative. For example big, bigger, biggest.

Some irregular adjectives have different forms, for example: good, better, best; bad, worse, worst.

Other adjectives don’t change at all: for example perfect, ultimate, prime.

Adjectives can also be used as pronouns: for example ‘He’s the eldest so he gets the bedroom at the front or ‘It was their fault, not mine. In these cases, there is no following noun. As well as adding information about the number, size, and quality, adjectives can also tell us which or what kind; they can specify; they can classify, and they can express an opinion. This makes them very useful words indeed!
